Is the iPad Mini Right for You?

It seems like every couple of months (It’s actually about every year and a half to two years but you get the idea) Apple is coming out with a new device that we as consumers just have to have.  It began with the iPod, moved to the iPhone, and then the iPad.  Now, it’s the iPad Mini.  But the real question is, “Is the iPad Mini right for You?”

Apple, wanting to capitalize on the small e-reader market, recently released the iPad Mini, which is pretty much the same thing as the iPad 2……….or 3………..or whatever the other new iPad is called that came out on the same day as the iPad Mini……..but I digress.  While the iPad Mini does have some things that the iPad apparently doesn’t it is in all intents and purposes a “mini iPad.”  Nothing really better or cooler.  Just a small iPad.

While having everything that Apple makes seems to be a new status symbol in America the fact of the matter is that MOST consumers are looking for good deals on electronics and phone because of a sluggish economy.  If Apple was looking to compete with the likes of Kindle, Kindle fire, Nook, and Nook HD they missed the mark.  Apple has priced the iPad Mini at $329 which is a far cry from the $199 for the Nook, $269 for the Nook HD, and well below what the Kindle Family offers consumers.  The one exception to that is the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with ultra-fast 4G LTE wireless which runs $499.

While the iPad Mini is cool it really is no different than the current generations of iPad like the 2 and the iPad with retina display.  Sure there are minor variations like speed, charging ports, retina display, but most people will not even notice the differences.

If you are looking for a Christmas gift and an e-reader is on your list the iPad Mini may be out of your price range and you will be able to find e-readers that do some of the same things in different ways as the iPad Mini for a much better price.  My opinion, grab a Kindle Fire or Nook HD, both are great little devices that offer the consumer a great price and similar functions as the iPad Mini.

So if you are looking for a good deal on an e-reader for Christmas or just as a gift for yourself or someone you love I don’t think the iPad Mini is what you are looking for.  The price is outside the e-reader market and there is really no difference with the current generations of the larger iPads.  If you want an iPad I recommend getting the larger version.  Until next time.

Is LifeProof right for you?

We have had a TON of people since the release of the LifeProof case ask us what we thought about it and whether or not it was a good case to have.  Because of that we made a little video testing the drop durability of the case.  Here’s the video:

The video has gotten us into a little bit of a war with LifeProof fanatics who believe that our phone was actually broken before we put it in the case. While I can attest to the fact that it wasn’t I understand where that thought could come in and affect our video and it’s integrity. However if you do any research you will find that LifeProof itself promotes a video where the iPhone they use is never seen and never taken out of the LifeProof case they use. You can see the video here:

However, since we have not filmed our follow up video I thought I would give some basic point on why we think the LifeProof case is not all that it’s cracked up to be:

* The case is NOT an Otterbox, Griffin Survivor, or Ballistic. It is small, thin, and flimsy. It CANNOT……I repeat CANNOT hold up to drops!! PERIOD!! I have seen the case cause iPhones to crack on a routine basis!!!

* The water proofness is great but only if you are swimming in the shallow end of the pool. It can only withstand 6 feet of depth. Compare that to the new Otterbox case coming out that is rumored to withstand up to 25 feet.

* The LifeProof is WAY to expensive for the case you get. To pay $80 for a case and another $30 for the ability to clip it to your belt is a little over the top.

* While the case can stay in a block of ice for a while who is really going to use that? You may live where it snows a lot but are you going to leave your phone outside in the snow for a while or put it in the freezer to charge? I don’t think so.

* Overall you can get a better deal with some of the new waterproof case that are beginning to hit the market. We will be covering them in coming blogs.

* LifeProof is trying to present themselves as a case for life but I would NEVER recommend this case to moms, dads, policemen, firemen, fishermen, etc. etc. etc.

In our “professional” opinion we don’t think the LifeProof is right for you…….or anyone really. We will be covering the LifeProof case and how it compares to some of the mainstays in coming blogs so stay tuned. Until then.

New Look, new blog, and new direction.

Over the last couple of months we have had some serious changes take place at Zellatek and I wanted to share with you what those are, why they have taken place, and where we are going from here.  When we originally started Zellatek we were looking to be the best source of information on smart phone accessories covering everything from Otterbox cases to bluetooth headphones.  During this time we also worked on getting distribution outlets in order to offer our readers access to the accessories we were reviewing and covering.

We landed some great connections for distribution but because of inventory issues we began to struggle to fulfill the orders that were coming in which caused us to rethink our position on having a store on the website.  So after a summer of transition and staff members moving on to other opportunities we decided to take the store down and move in  the original direction we wanted to go in where we review and discuss the myriad amount of accessories that are offered for people to buy but in a way that helps them get the best accessory for their needs.

So, moving forward you can look forward to the following:

*  We will review cases still but with a new direction of helping people find what best fits their needs like Mom’s, Dad’s, those who’s profession may require a lot of physical activity, etc.

*  We will continue our videos but will also begin to cover things like repair issues, new service providers, and more.

*  We will go indepth on each case we cover.

*  We will tell you the best deals and which companies and cases to stay away from.

*  We will be giving away cool cases and accessories to our most loyal readers.

*  We will bring in guest bloggers.

*  We will do our best to offer the best coverage of all the accessories we can find and give our very biased opinion on them.

We are very excited with the new direction we are headed and will begin to really rebuild the website will great content.  For those looking for the content we had before you can find everything in our archived sections:
